A new application of principal response curves for summarizing abrupt and cyclic shifts of communities over space ArchiMer
Auber, Arnaud; Travers-trolet, Morgane; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Ernande, Bruno.
There is a growing need to easily describe and synthesize the dynamics of ecosystems’ components in space and time. Most multivariate analyses provide ordination diagrams or biplots that are too cluttered to allow simple reading and are unfamiliar to most users. To overcome such difficulties, a novel application of principal response curves (PRCs) is proposed. Principal response curves are traditionally used to assess treatment effects on community structure measured repeatedly over time. In this new application, the tested factor and the repeated-observation axis are replaced by time and space, respectively. The georeferencing of sampling sites permits to produce an easy-to-read map that summarizes both the temporal dynamics of the community and the...

Approche quantitative de la fonction de nourricerie jouée par les systèmes vasières-estuaires ArchiMer
Parlier, Emmanuel.
Coastal fish populations settle more or less frequently, at various stages, estuarine systems. Tidal marshes are one of the components of these mosaics of habitats. The first part of this work describes fish assemblages through the utilisation of these systems by fishes analysed in order to propose a revised functional classification of ecological guilds. T h i s new classification is used to compare fish communities of four estuarine systems in the western coast of France: the Mont Saint- Michel Bay, the Saint-Brieuc Bay, the Loire estuary and the Aiguillon Bay. The second part aims at characterizing the nursery function as defined by Beck et al. (2001). Acombinative approach based on gut content analysis, and stable isotope analysis shows that Yo Y s e a...

Assessment of the ecological status of coastal areas and estuaries in France, using multiple fish-based indicators: a comparative analysis on the Vilaine estuary ArchiMer
Brind'Amour, Anik; Lobry, Jeremy.
When reviewing the various fish-based community indicators aiming at assessing the ecological status of marine communities and/or ecosystems, a typology consisting of three major components emerges. The first component highlights the choice of relevant metrics associated with a level of organization (e. g. population or community). The second relies on the method used to combine the metrics (an aggregated indicator or a synoptic table). The third refers to the type of analysis (direct or indirect) that is used to establish the link between the metrics and a given pressure. In this paper we use the Vilaine coastal-estuarine fish communities as a case study to discuss and relate two different approaches to the suggested typology. The first approach...

Fishing effects on the diversity dynamics of demersal fish communities. Comparative analysis of the role of the interactions between specices in the Bay of Biscay and in the Gulf of Lion (France). ArchiMer
Blanchard, Fabian.
This work deals with the fishing effects on the diversity dynamics of demersal fish communities, focusing on the biotic interactions. Multispecies indices were used in order to characterise the demersal fish community dynamics of the Bay of Biscay and of the Gulf of Lions. These are the diversity indices, the temporal variability of the total biomass and of the slope of the number size spectra and the slope of the species-area curves (spatial segregation). The data were provided by yearly bottom trawl surveys EVHOE, CHALIST and MEDITS carried out in these two areas since 1983 by IFREMER for stock assessment. The differences between areas are related to a fishing index (mean value of the annual landings of demersal fish per surface area). Other areas are...

Headwater stream fish fauna from the Upper Paranapanema River basin Biota Neotropica
Cetra,Mauricio; Mattox,George Mendes Taliaferro; Ferreira,Fabio Cop; Guinato,Rayssa Bernardi; Silva,Fernando Vieira; Pedrosa,Marina.
Abstract The Paraná River basin has about 600 fish species. In the Upper Paraná, 310 fish species were recorded, with 52 species were registered in the streams and headwaters of the Paranapanema River. The aim of this study was to characterize the stream fish communities in the Upper Paranapanema River basin. Samplings were conducted with electrofishing during the dry season in the year of 2014. The collection effort consisted of 30 streams stretches. As a result, 41 species of stream fish were recorded in the Upper Paranapanema River basin, distributed in 26 genera, 11 families and 7 orders. Thirty-nine percent of the species can be considered rare, 41% intermediate and 20% common. We captured approximately eight species by stream stretch and the...

Ichthyofauna of lotic environments in the Ivinhema river basin, upper Paraná river, Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Vicentin,Wagner; Ferreira,Fabiane Silva; Súarez,Yzel Rondon.
Abstract: In order to inventory the species richness and fish fauna composition along the Ivinhema river basin, 232 stretches of rivers and streams were sampled from 2000 to 2018, using a rectangular sieve, trawls, gillnets, cast nets, and electrofishing. A total of 141 species was caught in the basin, including seven orders and 35 families. For the recorded species, 42 are from the upper Paraná river, 51 from lower Paraná river, 27 from other basins, two from other continents, and the origin for 19 species are unknown/not reported. Six species are registred for the first time in the upper Paraná river basin: Astyanax abramis, Moenkhausia oligolepis, Serrapinnus kriegi, Curimatopsis myersi, Pyxiloricaria menezesi, and Cichlasoma dimerus. This is the first...
